Practical job-search guidance
Updated 23 October 2026
Use these checklists alongside the original employer notice. They explain how to assess a listing and prepare an application without treating a search result as an offer.
Check a vacancy before applying
- Confirm the destination. Open the employer's own careers website and find the vacancy or reference number. A third-party application service can be legitimate, but verify that the employer links to it. Compare the employer name and role with the listing you found.
- Check status and time. Read the closing date and timezone on the original notice. “Not stated” means the catalogue has no confirmed deadline. A page that still opens may describe a closed role. When details conflict, seek clarification through the employer's published contact route.
- Separate requirements. Make two columns: required and preferred. Record education, relevant experience, languages and licences. Match each required item to evidence from your own work; do not invent qualifications to match keywords.
- Check location restrictions. Remote does not necessarily mean worldwide. Look for permitted countries, timezones, travel, residency and work-authorization conditions. Treat sponsorship as unknown unless the employer explicitly addresses it.
- Review the application route. Do not send identity documents or payment through an unsolicited message. Verify unusual requests with the employer using independently located contact details. CareerAtlas does not process applications or collect recruitment fees.
Prepare a clear CV
Start with the vacancy requirements, then choose the most relevant evidence. A useful experience bullet explains the action, scope and result. For example: “Coordinated weekly field-team schedules across three sites and documented unresolved service issues.” This is a generic example; replace it with your own accurate experience. Add numbers only when you can support them.
Use clear section headings, consistent dates and readable text. Keep contact information limited to what you want the employer to receive. Remove identity numbers, unrelated sensitive details and other people's contact information unless there is a legitimate need and permission. Use the CV Builder to draft and preview, then check the downloaded file itself.
Check the final file
- Read every page for clipped text, spelling and dates.
- Confirm the format matches the employer's requested file type.
- Try selecting and copying text from a PDF to catch image-only exports.
- Check hyperlinks and remove placeholder examples.
- Keep a private record of the vacancy URL, closing date and version submitted.
Use the catalogue carefully
Combine country, career level and topic filters. Broaden one filter at a time if no results appear. Saved jobs remain in your browser and do not submit an application. “New since your last visit” refers to collection time, not necessarily the employer's publication date. Read our sources policy for coverage and checking limits.
